Mil and Micron Explained

What’s the Difference Between Mil and Micron?
You may come across “mil” as a unit of measurement (UOM), especially when referring to paint protection films (PPF). But what does it mean?
- Mil (thousandth of an inch): 1 mil = 1/1000 of an inch
- Micron (µm): 1 mil ≈ 25 microns
For example, PPF Xtreme is a 160-micron film, which is also equivalent to 6.5 mil.
Understanding Micron Thickness
Even if two films share the same micron rating, they might feel different. This is due to variations in adhesive thickness. When a product lists a micron specification, it only refers to the face stock, not the adhesive.
This explains why some films may feel thicker or thinner than expected—because the adhesive layer plays a role in the overall feel and performance.
